Tissue Overview

The striatum is a major input nucleus of the basal ganglia, a group of subcortical structures. Composed of the caudate nucleus and putamen, it receives extensive input from the cerebral cortex. It is critical for facilitating voluntary, purposeful movement and for procedural learning, habit formation, and reward-motivated behavior. Its dysfunction is central to movement disorders like Parkinson's and Huntington's disease.
