Tonsil

Tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue located at the back of the throat (oropharynx). They form part of Waldeyer's ring, a first line of immune defense against inhaled or ingested pathogens. Their surface crypts increase area for antigen capture. They contain follicles where B cells are activated, playing a role in mucosal immunity, especially during childhood.
