Neocortex

The neocortex is the evolutionarily newest and largest part of the cerebral cortex, characterized by its six-layered structure. It is responsible for higher brain functions, including sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought, and language. Its extensive, highly folded surface (gyri and sulci) dramatically increases cortical area and cognitive capacity, distinguishing mammals, particularly primates.
