Mammary gland

Mammary glands are modified sweat glands located within the breasts. Their primary function is to produce milk (lactation) to nourish an infant. They consist of a network of ducts and lobules containing alveoli, where milk is synthesized and secreted under the influence of prolactin. Myoepithelial cells contract to eject milk in response to oxytocin. They undergo significant development during pregnancy.
