Tissue Overview
The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest peripheral nerve in the human body. It originates from the lumbosacral plexus (L4-S3) in the lower back and runs down the posterior thigh, branching into the tibial and common fibular nerves near the knee. It provides motor innervation to the muscles of the posterior thigh, leg, and foot, and carries sensory information from these regions.
