Tissue Overview

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped, muscular sac that stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver. It is located on the inferior surface of the liver. In response to cholecystokinin (CCK) released after a meal, it contracts and releases bile via the cystic and common bile ducts into the duodenum, where bile emulsifies fats to aid in their digestion and absorption.
