Salivary gland

Salivary glands are exocrine glands that produce saliva, which is secreted into the oral cavity. The three major pairs are the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Saliva contains water, electrolytes, mucus, antibacterial compounds, and enzymes like amylase (which begins starch digestion). It lubricates food for swallowing, initiates digestion, maintains oral hygiene, and facilitates taste and speech.
