Skin

The skin is the body's largest organ, forming a protective barrier against the external environment. It has two main layers: the epidermis (outer, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium) and the underlying dermis (dense connective tissue with blood vessels, nerves, appendages). Functions include thermoregulation, sensation (touch, pain, temperature), protection from pathogens and UV radiation, synthesis of vitamin D, and preventing excessive water loss.
