Melanotropes

Melanotropes are endocrine cells found in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland (well-developed in some vertebrates, rudimentary in humans). They produce and secrete melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), which is cleaved from the POMC precursor. MSH stimulates melanocytes to produce melanin, leading to skin darkening. In humans, its role is less prominent compared to other POMC-derived hormones like ACTH.
