Species Overview
A small to medium ruminant (family Bovidae) domesticated from the bezoar ibex (Capra aegagrus) ~10,000 years ago in the Zagros Mountains of Iran. Adults weigh 20โ140 kg depending on breed, with over 300 breeds. They have a lean build, cloven hooves, and most breeds bear horns (both sexes) and a chin beard. Coat types range from short hair to long fiber (Angora mohair, Cashmere). Goats are agile climbers and browsers, preferring leaves, twigs, and shrubs over grassโmaking them ecologically distinct from sheep. They have a four-compartment ruminant stomach. They are highly adaptable and are the primary livestock of subsistence farmers in developing countries, providing milk, meat (chevon), fiber, leather, and manure. Global population: ~1 billion. Goats are intelligent and curious. They are used in antibody production (polyclonal and transgenic) and as models for cardiovascular and orthopedic research. Females (does) have a ~150-day gestation, producing 1โ3 kids. The genome is sequenced (2n=60). Lifespan: 15โ18 years.
