Regulatory chondrocytes

A proposed state where chondrocytes may act to suppress inflammation or catabolism within the cartilage, perhaps by secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-4, IL-10, IL-1Ra) or tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). This concept is less defined but highlights the potential functional heterogeneity among chondrocytes in maintaining tissue homeostasis.
