Species Overview
A small, nocturnal marsupial (family Petauridae) native to Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands. Adults weigh only 90โ160 g with a head-body length of 12โ15 cm and a prehensile, bushy tail of equal length. They are named for their gliding membrane (patagium)โa furred membrane stretching from the fifth finger to the ankle on each sideโwhich allows them to glide up to 50 m between trees. Fur is blue-gray with a dark dorsal stripe and a pale belly. They have large eyes for nocturnal vision and large, mobile ears. They are omnivorous, eating tree sap, gum, nectar, pollen, insects, and small vertebrates. Highly social, they live in groups of 5โ12 in tree hollows, engaging in mutual grooming and scent-marking. Males have frontal and sternal scent glands. Females have a pouch with 2 teats; gestation is ~16 days, producing 1โ2 joeys that develop in the pouch for ~70 days. They are popular exotic pets worldwide, though care requirements (social housing, specialized diet) are demanding. Lifespan: 5โ7 years wild, up to 12โ15 in captivity. 2n=22.
