Species Overview
The largest living cat subspecies, native to the temperate forests of the Russian Far East (Primorsky and Khabarovsk), with small numbers in northeast China. Males weigh 180โ300 kg and measure up to 3.3 m in total length; females are smaller (100โ170 kg). They have thick, pale orange fur with widely spaced dark stripes and a dense winter coat adapted to harsh Siberian winters. The underbelly is white. They have massive forelimbs and paws capable of delivering lethal blows. Apex predators, they hunt wild boar, red deer, sika deer, and occasionally brown bears. They are solitary and territorial; male home ranges can exceed 1,000 km?. Females have a gestation of ~103 days and produce 2โ4 cubs per litter, with a high cub mortality rate. By the 1940s, hunting reduced the population to ~40 individuals; conservation efforts have recovered numbers to ~500โ600 in Russia. They remain Endangered (IUCN). They are a flagship species for conservation and are maintained in studbook-managed captive breeding programs worldwide.
