Species Overview
One of the most extraordinary mammals on Earthโa monotreme (order Monotremata, family Ornithorhynchidae) endemic to eastern Australia and Tasmania. Adults weigh 0.7โ2.4 kg with a body length of ~50 cm. They have dense, waterproof brown fur, a broad, flat, rubbery bill equipped with electroreceptors (detecting weak electric fields of prey in murky water), webbed feet, and a beaver-like tail for fat storage. Males have venomous spurs on the hind legsโone of few venomous mammals. They are semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers and streams, and are excellent swimmers. They feed on aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, worms, shrimp). Most remarkably, they are one of only five species of egg-laying mammals: females lay 1โ3 leathery eggs, incubating them for ~10 days. They lack teatsโmilk seeps through abdominal skin patches. Their genome reveals a mosaic of reptilian, avian, and mammalian genes (2n=52, with ten sex chromosomes: 5X + 5Y in males). Lifespan: up to 20+ years. IUCN: Near Threatened due to habitat degradation, drought, and climate change.
