Species Overview
A large nocturnal strepsirrhine primate (family Galagidae) from the coastal forests of East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar). Adults weigh 0.7โ0.9 kg, making them among the biggest galagos. They have dense, woolly, brownish-gray fur, a long bushy tail, prominent rounded ears that can move independently for sound localization, and large forward-facing eyes with a reflective tapetum lucidum. They are arboreal quadrupeds capable of powerful leaps between branches. Their diet includes fruits, gums, insects, and small vertebrates. They communicate with a rich vocal repertoire and use urine-washing (spreading urine on hands and feet) for scent-marking. Primarily solitary foragers, females may nest communally. Gestation is ~130 days, producing 1โ2 offspring. Their genome has been sequenced as a representative basal primate (strepsirrhine) for comparative genomics, providing insights into early primate evolution. In captivity they can live 18+ years. They are an important species for understanding primate sensory adaptations and the evolution of nocturnality. IUCN: Least Concern.
