Species Overview
A large perissodactyl (family Equidae) domesticated ~5,500 years ago on the Eurasian steppe (modern-day Kazakhstan/Ukraine). Adults weigh 380โ1,000 kg, standing 120โ180 cm at shoulder. Over 300 breeds exhibit extraordinary variation in size (from Falabella miniatures to Shire draft horses), build, and coat color/pattern. They have a single-toed hoof (the third digit), a long arched neck, flowing mane and tail, and large eyes providing nearly 360ยฐ vision. They are hindgut-fermenting herbivores, eating grasses and hay. Horses are flight animals with keen senses, high intelligence, and a remarkable capacity for human bonding. They transformed human civilization, enabling warfare, agriculture, transportation, and sport. They remain important in equestrian sports, therapy, and recreation. In biomedical research, they are used for antiserum production, exercise physiology, and as models for orthopedic injuries and laminitis. Females have an ~11-month gestation, one foal. The genome was sequenced in 2009 (2n=64). Lifespan: 25โ30 years. IUCN: domesticated; the truly wild ancestor (E. ferus) is extinct.

Provisional atlas release
This view is a provisional release built from a public dataset (PMID 39756438) that has not yet completed the LACA annotation pipeline: cell groups are unsupervised Leiden clusters without curated cell-type names, and the embedding was recomputed by LACA (normalize/HVG/PCA/UMAP) without batch correction. Gene search is disabled pending the curated release.
