Sunda pangolin

A scaly mammal (order Pholidota, family Manidae) from Southeast Asian tropical forests. Adults weigh 2–7 kg with a body length of 40–65 cm plus a prehensile tail of similar length. The body is covered in overlapping, keratinous scales (brownish-yellow to dark brown)—unique among mammals. The underbelly has sparse fur. They are toothless, possessing an extremely long, sticky tongue (up to 25 cm) for extracting ants and termites from nests. Strong, curved claws on the forelimbs are used for excavating prey and climbing. Nocturnal, arboreal, and solitary. When threatened, they curl into an impenetrable armored ball. Females produce one offspring per year after ~130 days of gestation; the infant rides on the mother's tail. Pangolins are the world's most trafficked mammals, driven by demand for their scales in traditional medicine and their meat as a luxury food item. This species is Critically Endangered (IUCN). It gained attention during COVID-19, as pangolin coronaviruses showed relatedness to SARS-CoV-2.
