Species Overview

A fully aquatic anuran (family Pipidae) native to sub-Saharan Africa. Adults weigh 60โ€“200 g with a flattened body (6โ€“12 cm), powerful hind legs with black-clawed, fully webbed toes, tiny forelimbs, and no tongue or visible ear drums. Skin is smooth, slippery, olive to brown with darker spots. Eyes are on top of the head. They lack a vocal sac; males call underwater. They feed by scavenging and shoveling food with their forelimbs. They have been one of the most important model organisms in developmental biology since the 1950s. Historically used in the first reliable pregnancy test (Hogben test)โ€”female frogs injected with pregnant women's urine would lay eggs in response to hCG. They remain vital for studies of embryogenesis, cell biology, and gene function (mRNA injection, CRISPR). They are allotetraploid (2n=36, ancient genome duplication), complicating genetics. Females can lay thousands of large, easily manipulated eggs. They are highly invasive where introduced (Europe, Americas, Asia). Lifespan: 15โ€“30 years in captivity. IUCN: Least Concern. Nobel Prize work (John Gurdon) on nuclear transplantation used this species.
