Species Overview

China's most iconic endangered mammal (family Ursidae). Adults weigh 80โ€“125 kg and stand ~60โ€“90 cm at the shoulder. Their striking black-and-white colorationโ€”black eye patches, ears, shoulders, and limbs against a white bodyโ€”is instantly recognizable. They inhabit montane bamboo forests of central China (Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu) at 1,500โ€“3,500 m elevation. Despite being classified in Carnivora, their diet is >99% bamboo (leaves and shoots), requiring consumption of 12โ€“38 kg daily due to low digestive efficiency. They possess a modified radial sesamoid bone ("pseudo-thumb") for gripping bamboo stems. Solitary except during mating season, with females being fertile for only 1โ€“3 days per year. Gestation: ~95โ€“160 days (with variable delayed implantation), usually 1โ€“2 cubs (typically only one survives). Cubs are altricial, born tiny (~100 g). Lifespan: ~20 years wild, 30 captive. Wild population: ~1,860 individuals. Conservation efforts (habitat protection, captive breeding) have succeeded in downlisting them from Endangered to Vulnerable (IUCN, 2016). 2n=42.
