Ciona savignyi

Species Overview
Ciona savignyi is a solitary ascidian found primarily in the Pacific Ocean, particularly along the coasts of Japan and western North America. It closely resembles Ciona intestinalis/robusta in external morphology but can be distinguished by pigmentation patterns, sperm morphology, and molecular markers. Adults are sessile, semi-transparent, and tubular, typically reaching 8โ12 cm in length, with two siphons for water intake and expulsion. Like other ascidians, it is a filter feeder that traps plankton and detritus in a pharyngeal mucous net. C. savignyi is a hermaphrodite that reproduces sexually via broadcast spawning. Its free-swimming tadpole larvae exhibit chordate features including a notochord and hollow dorsal nerve cord, which are resorbed upon metamorphosis. The genome of C. savignyi was sequenced and published alongside that of C. intestinalis, providing a valuable resource for comparative genomics. Notably, the two species show very high levels of polymorphism despite morphological similarity, and their genomes differ significantly in non-coding regions. C. savignyi has been used extensively in studies of developmental gene regulatory networks, cell lineage tracing, and the evolution of the chordate body plan. It also serves as a model for studying innate immunity in invertebrate chordates.
