Species Overview
Phallusia mammillata is a large, solitary ascidian found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic, from the British Isles to West Africa. Adults are distinctive: globular to ovoid in shape, with a smooth, white to translucent cartilaginous tunic that can reach up to 15 cm in height. The two siphons are prominent and often tinged with yellow or orange. They inhabit rocky substrates, harbor walls, and seagrass beds from the shallow subtidal zone to depths of about 80 m. Like all ascidians, P. mammillata is a filter feeder, using its pharyngeal basket to trap plankton and organic particles. It is a hermaphrodite with external fertilization. Its eggs are large (~140 ?m), opaque, and rich in yolk, which distinguishes them from the smaller, more transparent eggs of Ciona. The embryos develop into tadpole larvae with a notochord and tail. P. mammillata has become an important model in developmental biology, particularly for studying left-right asymmetry, cell fate specification, and cortical reorganization after fertilization. Its large, optically clear embryos are ideal for live imaging. Genomic and transcriptomic resources have been developed, contributing to comparative evo-devo studies across tunicates.
