Species Overview

A medium-sized hamster (family Cricetidae) originally from arid regions of Syria and southern Turkey. Adults weigh 100–150 g with a stocky body (~15 cm) and a very short tail (~1.5 cm). Wild-type fur is golden-brown dorsally with a white belly; many color morphs exist in captivity. They have enormous, expandable cheek pouches for transporting food to underground hoards. They are solitary and aggressively territorial as adults—one of the most solitary rodents known. Nocturnal and crepuscular. Diet: seeds, grains, vegetables, and insects. Nearly all laboratory and pet golden hamsters descend from a single litter captured near Aleppo, Syria, in 1930. They have the shortest gestation of any placental mammal (~16 days), producing litters of 6–12 pups. They are important biomedical models for COVID-19 (highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2), influenza, pancreatic cancer, circadian biology, and hibernation. They exhibit facultative hibernation when exposed to short photoperiods and cold. Lifespan: 2–3 years. Wild populations are Vulnerable.
