Species Overview
A medium-sized cricetid rodent found from the southern United States through Central America to northern South America. Adults weigh 100โ225 g with a stocky body (12โ20 cm), coarse grizzled brownish fur, and a shorter tail. They inhabit dense grasslands, agricultural fields, and weedy disturbed areas, creating elaborate runway systems through vegetation. Primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses and green plant material, also seeds and insects. They are prolific breeders (multiple litters of 5โ12 pups per year, gestation ~27 days), and populations can irrupt dramatically, causing agricultural damage. In biomedical research, cotton rats are uniquely valuable because they are highly susceptible to human respiratory virusesโparticularly respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza, measles, and adenovirusโfar more so than mice. They are the standard animal model for RSV vaccine and antiviral development. Lifespan: ~6โ12 months in the wild. Their immune system and viral receptor expression resemble humans more closely than typical laboratory rodents. IUCN: Least Concern.

This view is a provisional release built from a public dataset (Qin et al., Sci Transl Med 2025, DOI:10.1126/scitranslmed.adw7535; control, uninfected lung and nasal samples) that has not yet completed the LACA annotation pipeline: cell groups are unsupervised Leiden clusters without curated cell-type names, and the embedding was recomputed by LACA (normalize/HVG/PCA/UMAP) without batch correction. Gene search is disabled pending the curated release.
