Species Overview
A small hamster native to the arid grasslands and deserts of northern China and Mongolia. Adults weigh 25โ40 g with a body length of ~9 cm and a relatively long tail (~3 cm) for a hamster. Fur is grayish-brown dorsally with a dark mid-dorsal stripe and a lighter belly. They are nocturnal, burrowing, and feed on seeds and insects. In the laboratory, they are docile and easy to maintain. Their paramount importance lies in biotechnology: Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, derived from this species in 1957, are the most widely used mammalian host for industrial production of recombinant therapeutic proteins, including ~70% of all monoclonal antibodies and many biopharmaceuticals (e.g., erythropoietin, tPA). CHO cells are preferred because they grow in suspension culture, can be adapted to serum-free media, and perform human-like post-translational modifications. The Chinese hamster genome has been sequenced to optimize CHO cell engineering. They have 2n=22 chromosomes (the lowest of any hamster), facilitating cytogenetics. Lifespan: 2โ3 years.

Gene search is disabled pending the curated release. Note: this dataset derives from CHO (Chinese hamster ovary) cell lines cultured in vitro, not from animal tissues.
