Species Overview
A large, stocky sciurid rodent native to eastern North America. Adults weigh 2โ6 kg, heaviest in autumn before hibernation. Body length is 40โ65 cm with a short, bushy tail. Fur is dense, grizzled brownish-gray. They have short, powerful limbs with strong claws for digging elaborate burrow systems (up to 20 m long, 1.5 m deep) with multiple entrances. Unlike most marmots, groundhogs are largely solitary. They are true hibernators, dormant from October to February, with body temperature dropping to ~3ยฐC. They are primarily herbivorous, eating grasses, clover, alfalfa, and garden vegetables, making them agricultural pests. They are also notable as the natural host of woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV), closely related to human hepatitis B virus, making them an important model for HBV infection and hepatocellular carcinoma. Females produce one litter of 2โ6 pups after a 32-day gestation. Celebrated in North American culture via Groundhog Day (Feb. 2). Lifespan: 6โ14 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
