Species Overview

A small North American cricetid rodent closely related to the deer mouse, native to the southeastern United States. Adults weigh only 10โ€“15 g, making them among the smallest Peromyscus species. They are best known as a textbook example of adaptive coat color evolution: inland populations have dark, agouti fur matching dark soil, while beach-dwelling subspecies (e.g., P. p. leucocephalus, the Santa Rosa beach mouse) are extremely pale, nearly white, matching white sand dunes. This phenotypic variation has been mapped to specific genes (Agouti, Mc1r), making it a landmark system in evolutionary developmental biology. They inhabit old fields, sandy soils, and coastal dunes. They are monogamous with biparental careโ€”both parents provision and groom pupsโ€”rare among rodents. Diet: seeds and insects. Gestation: ~23 days, litters of 1โ€“5 pups. Lifespan: ~1โ€“5 years. Several beach subspecies are federally listed as Endangered or Threatened due to coastal development and habitat loss.
