Species Overview
A small, slender ground squirrel native to the Great Plains of central North America. Adults weigh 110โ270 g. Their most recognizable feature is 13 alternating dark-brown and tan longitudinal stripes along the back, with the dark stripes containing light spots. They inhabit short-grass prairies, golf courses, and mowed roadsides. Solitary and diurnal, they feed on seeds, grass, insects, and small vertebrates. They are obligate hibernators, spending October through March/April in deep torpor during which heart rate drops from ~200 to ~5 bpm and body temperature can fall below 5ยฐC. They excavate deep burrow systems (up to 2 m deep). Females produce one litter of 6โ13 pups after a ~28-day gestation. This species is extensively used in hibernation physiology research, studies of cardiac ischemia tolerance (their hearts resist damage during hibernation), and neuroprotection. The genome has been sequenced (2n=36). Lifespan: 4โ5 years. They play an important ecological role as prey for raptors and small carnivores. IUCN: Least Concern.
