Species Overview
A small rodent (subfamily Gerbillinae, family Muridae) native to the steppes and semi-deserts of Mongolia and northern China. Adults weigh 50โ100 g with a body length of 10โ13 cm and a hairy, tufted tail. Fur is sandy-brown (agouti) dorsally with a white belly, providing desert camouflage. They have large eyes, prominent ears, and elongated hind feet for jumping. Their kidneys are highly efficient at concentrating urine, an adaptation to arid conditions. They are social, living in pairs or family groups in burrow systems. Diet: seeds, roots, and green vegetation. They were introduced to the laboratory in the 1950s and are widely used as experimental animals, particularly for studies of epilepsy (high spontaneous seizure rate), cerebral ischemia (incomplete Circle of Willis), auditory research, and lipid metabolism. They are also popular pets. Gestation: ~25 days, litters of 3โ8 pups. Lifespan: 3โ5 years. Chromosome number: 2n=44.

This view is a provisional release built from a public dataset (PMID 40839430) that has not yet completed the LACA annotation pipeline: cell groups are unsupervised Leiden clusters without curated cell-type names, and the embedding was recomputed by LACA (normalize/HVG/PCA/UMAP) without batch correction. Cells with fewer than 200 detected genes were filtered. Gene search is disabled pending the curated release.
