Species Overview

The largest North American ground squirrel, found in Arctic and subarctic tundra and alpine meadows of Alaska, northern Canada, and eastern Siberia. Adults weigh 0.5โ€“1.5 kg, with significant seasonal fluctuation. Fur is tawny-brown with white dorsal flecking. They are colonial, diurnal, and live in burrow systems in well-drained soil. Omnivorous: seeds, berries, roots, mushrooms, insects, and even carrion. Their most remarkable trait is extreme hibernationโ€”lasting 7โ€“8 months, during which body temperature drops to as low as ?2.9ยฐC, the lowest recorded for any mammal. They arouse periodically (every 2โ€“3 weeks) to shiver and rewarm. Their ability to survive supercooling and ischemia-reperfusion makes them a premier model for cryobiology, organ preservation, and neuroprotection research. They are an important prey item for golden eagles, grizzly bears, and Arctic foxes. Females produce one litter of 5โ€“10 pups per year after ~25 days of gestation. Lifespan: 8โ€“10 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
