Species Overview

A medium-sized hystricomorph rodent (family Chinchillidae) native to the Andes of northern Chile at elevations of 3,000–5,000 m. Adults weigh 400–600 g with a compact body, large rounded ears, large dark eyes, and a bushy tail. They possess the densest fur of any land mammal, with up to 20,000 hairs per cm? (60–80 hairs per follicle), which is blue-gray and incredibly soft—an adaptation to extreme cold at high altitudes. They are nocturnal and crepuscular, living in rocky crevices in colonial groups. Diet is herbivorous: grasses, seeds, and shrubs. They take dust baths to maintain fur condition. Due to their luxurious fur, they were hunted nearly to extinction by the early 20th century; wild populations remain Endangered (IUCN). Captive-bred chinchillas are kept for fur farming and as pets. They are an important model in auditory neuroscience because their cochlear structure and hearing range (20 Hz–25 kHz) closely match humans. Gestation: ~111 days, 1–3 precocial young. Lifespan: 10–20 years. 2n=64.
