Species Overview
A large, predatory freshwater fish (family Channidae) native to East Asia (China, Korea, Russia). Adults commonly reach 50โ85 cm and 3โ8 kg (up to 15 kg). They have an elongated, cylindrical body, a flattened, broad head resembling a snake (hence the name), a large mouth with sharp teeth, and long dorsal and anal fins. Coloration is brown with dark blotches. They possess a suprabranchial organ enabling obligate air-breathing, allowing survival out of water for several days and overland movement between water bodies. They tolerate a wide temperature range (0โ30ยฐC) and low-oxygen environments. Top predators eating fish, frogs, crustaceans, and small mammals. They exhibit biparental careโboth parents guard floating egg masses and fry aggressively. They are a valued food fish in Asia but are one of the most feared invasive species in North America (established in several US states), where they threaten native fish communities. Their import is banned in many US states. Females produce 20,000โ50,000 eggs. The genome is sequenced. Lifespan: 8โ12 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
