Scyliorhinus canicula is a small, abundant catshark (family Scyliorhinidae) found throughout the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, from Norway to Senegal. Adults typically reach 60โ80 cm in length and are easily identified by their slender body, blunt snout, large cat-like eyes with nictitating-like folds, nasal flaps, and a sandy-brown dorsal surface covered with numerous small, dark spots. The ventral surface is pale. They have two small dorsal fins positioned posteriorly, broad pectoral fins, and a heterocercal tail. S. canicula is a demersal species inhabiting sandy, muddy, and gravelly bottoms from shallow coastal waters to depths of about 400 m. It feeds on a variety of benthic invertebrates including crustaceans, mollusks, and polychaete worms, as well as small fish. Reproduction is oviparous; females deposit tough, rectangular egg cases ("mermaid's purses") that are anchored to seaweed or other structures by long tendrils. Embryos develop over 5โ11 months depending on water temperature. S. canicula is one of the most common and well-studied sharks in European waters and serves as a major model organism in chondrichthyan developmental biology, neurobiology, and comparative genomics. Its genome has been sequenced, providing insights into the evolution of jawed vertebrate immune systems and skeletal development.
