Species Overview
A large, euryhaline perciform fish (family Latidae) native to the Indo-West Pacific, from the Persian Gulf to Australia and Papua New Guinea. Adults commonly reach 60โ120 cm and 10โ25 kg (up to 180 cm and 60 kg). They have a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body with a concave forehead, large mouth, and rounded caudal fin. They are catadromousโadults spawn in estuarine or marine waters, and juveniles migrate into freshwater rivers and swamps to grow. They are a premier aquaculture species in Australia and Southeast Asia (~200,000 tonnes/year). They exhibit sequential protandrous hermaphroditismโmaturing first as males (3โ4 years) and later transforming into females (6โ8 years). Apex predators, eating fish and crustaceans. Females are extremely fecund, producing millions of eggs per spawning event. They are prized game and food fish, with firm, white, mild-flavored flesh. They tolerate wide salinity (0โ40 ppt) and temperature ranges. The genome is sequenced (2n=48). Lifespan: 20+ years. IUCN: Least Concern.
