Mchenga conophoros

Mchenga conophoros is a small (8–12 cm) freshwater cichlid (family Cichlidae) endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. It belongs to the "mbuna" or "utaka"-related haplochromine radiation, one of the most spectacular examples of adaptive radiation in vertebrates. Males typically display silvery-blue coloration and are distinguished by a unique behavioral trait: they construct elaborate sand "bowers" or conical mounds on the lake floor to attract females for mating—a behavior reflected in the species name ("conophoros" = cone-bearing). Females select mates based on bower quality, size, and male courtship vigor. Like most Lake Malawi cichlids, M. conophoros is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning, females incubate fertilized eggs in their buccal cavity for 2–3 weeks, releasing free-swimming fry. The species inhabits sandy substrates in the shallow to intermediate zones of the lake, feeding on plankton, benthic invertebrates, and organic particles. M. conophoros has been studied in the context of sexual selection, speciation, and the evolution of extended phenotypes (bower building as a sexually selected trait). It is part of the Lake Malawi cichlid species flock, which contains over 800 species that evolved within the last 1–2 million years. Genomic resources from the cichlid radiation facilitate comparative studies.
