Species Overview
Oreochromis niloticus is a large (up to 60 cm, commonly 20โ35 cm), robust freshwater cichlid native to the Nile River basin, West Africa, and the Levant, but now introduced and farmed globally in tropical and subtropical regions on every continent. It has a laterally compressed, deep body, a long dorsal fin with both spiny and soft-rayed portions, and a coloration of silvery-gray with 6โ8 faint dark vertical bars. Males become darker with reddish fin margins during breeding. O. niloticus is one of the most important aquaculture species in the world, second only to carps in global freshwater fish production, due to its fast growth, omnivorous diet, tolerance of poor water quality, resistance to disease, and ability to reproduce readily in captivity. It is a maternal mouthbrooder; females incubate eggs and fry in the mouth for about two weeks. It thrives in a wide range of habitatsโlakes, rivers, ponds, irrigation channelsโand tolerates low oxygen, high temperatures (up to 42ยฐC), and moderate salinity. However, its invasive potential has caused severe ecological damage in many non-native habitats, displacing native species. The genome was sequenced as part of the cichlid genome project. O. niloticus is a key model for studies of sex determination (XX/XY with environmental influence), growth genetics, and aquaculture genomics. GIFT (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) strains have been developed and distributed worldwide.
