A large, predatory freshwater fish (family Esocidae) circumpolar in distribution across the Northern Hemisphereโfound in lakes, rivers, and wetlands of North America, Europe, and northern Asia. Adults commonly reach 50โ120 cm and 2โ15 kg; trophy fish exceed 130 cm and 25 kg. Females grow much larger than males. They have a long, torpedo-shaped body, a broad, flattened, duck-bill-like snout, and a large mouth armed with hundreds of sharp, backward-pointing teeth. Coloration is olive-green with lighter yellow-green bean-shaped spots in horizontal rows along the flanks. They are apex ambush predators in freshwater ecosystems, striking from concealment with explosive speed. Diet: fish (including other pike), frogs, crayfish, small mammals, and waterfowl. Cannibalism is common. Spawning occurs in early spring in shallow, vegetated areas; females scatter 15,000โ75,000+ adhesive eggs. They have been prized game fish since antiquity. Esocids represent a basal teleost lineage (order Esociformes) of interest for comparative genomics. The genome is sequenced (2n=50). Lifespan: 7โ24 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
