Species Overview
A large sarcopterygian (lobe-finned) fish (order Lepidosireniformes, family Protopteridae) found in freshwater habitats of West and Central Africa. Adults can reach 100 cm in length. They have an eel-like, elongated body with rudimentary pectoral and pelvic fins (thin, filamentous limb-like structures), small eyes, and a continuous fin along the back, around the tail, and along the belly. They possess both gills and a pair of functional lungs (modified swim bladder), enabling them to breathe airโan obligate air-breather. During the dry season, they aestivate in a mucus-lined burrow (cocoon) in dried mud, surviving for months or even years without food or water, dramatically reducing metabolic rate. This extreme dormancy is of major interest in metabolic physiology. They are predatory, eating fish, invertebrates, and amphibians. External fertilization; males guard eggs in burrows. Lungfish are the closest living relatives of tetrapods, making them crucial for understanding the fish-to-tetrapod evolutionary transition. The genome is massive (~40+ Gb). Lifespan: 20โ30+ years.
