Echeneis naucrates is a slender, elongated marine fish (family Echeneidae) found circumglobally in tropical and warm-temperate seas. Adults typically reach 50–80 cm (up to 110 cm) and are distinguished by a large, flat, oval sucking disc on the dorsal surface of the head—a highly modified first dorsal fin composed of paired transverse lamellae (slat-like plates) that create a vacuum for attachment. The body is streamlined, brownish to dark gray with a distinctive broad dark lateral stripe bordered by white, and the lower jaw projects beyond the upper. E. naucrates is a commensal species that attaches to larger hosts—sharks, rays, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, and even boats and divers—using its cephalic disc. While attached, it gains free transportation, protection, and access to food scraps from the host's meals. Unlike some remoras, E. naucrates frequently detaches and swims freely, actively hunting small fish, crustaceans, and zooplankton. It is the most host-generalist and free-swimming of all remora species. Historically, some indigenous Pacific and Caribbean cultures used tethered remoras to catch sea turtles by exploiting their attachment behavior. The adhesive disc has inspired biomimetic research into reversible suction mechanisms. Reproduction involves pelagic eggs and larvae. The species is of minor commercial importance but of significant evolutionary and biomechanical interest.
