Species Overview
A small fish (family Gasterosteidae) with a circumpolar distribution in coastal marine, brackish, and freshwater habitats of the Northern Hemisphere. Adults measure 4โ8 cm and weigh 1โ5 g. They have a streamlined body lacking scales, replaced by lateral bony plates, and three prominent dorsal spines (plus pelvic spines) for predator defense. Coloration is silver-green; breeding males develop brilliant red throats and blue eyes. After the last ice age (~12,000 years ago), marine populations colonized thousands of freshwater lakes and streams, evolving parallel adaptations (loss of armor plates, pelvic spines, and pigmentation)โproviding one of the best-documented examples of parallel evolution and adaptive radiation. The Eda gene (ectodysplasin) controls plate number. Males build nests from plant material, glued with kidney secretions, and perform a zigzag courtship dance. They provide paternal care (guarding and fanning eggs). Their genome is sequenced (2n=42). They are a premier model in evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, and genomics of adaptation. Lifespan: 2โ4 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
