Species Overview
A medium-to-large salmonid (family Salmonidae) native to cold-water tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America. Adults typically weigh 1โ5 kg (up to 25 kg in anadromous "steelhead" form). They have a streamlined body with olive to blue-green back, silver sides, a distinctive pinkish-red lateral stripe (the "rainbow"), and numerous black spots on the body, dorsal fin, and tail. They exist in resident freshwater (rainbow trout) and anadromous (steelhead) life history forms within the same species. They inhabit cold, well-oxygenated rivers, lakes, and streams. Predatory, eating insects, crustaceans, and smaller fish. They are the most widely introduced fish species for sport fishing worldwide, established on every continent except Antarctica. They are also a major aquaculture species (~800,000 tonnes/year globally). Used extensively as a model in fish physiology, toxicology, immunology, and nutrition. Females lay 200โ8,000 eggs in gravel redds. The genome is sequenced (2n=58โ64, residual tetraploidy). Lifespan: 4โ11 years. IUCN: Least Concern (native range).
