Species Overview
A small freshwater anabantoid (family Osphronemidae) native to the rice paddies, floodplains, and shallow waters of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Wild fish are 5โ6 cm with short fins and muted brownish-green coloration, capable of flashing iridescent blue/red. Through centuries of selective breeding (originally for fighting, now for ornament), domestic bettas have been transformed into one of the most spectacular aquarium fishโwith enormous flowing fins (halfmoon, crowntail, plakat, dumbo, etc.) and every color imaginable. Males are intensely aggressive toward other males, flaring their gill covers and fins in display. They possess a labyrinth organ for air-breathing, enabling survival in oxygen-poor water. Males build elaborate bubble nests at the water surface, guard eggs, and tend fry. Females produce 100โ500 eggs per spawn. They are used in research on aggression, animal behavior, pigmentation genetics, and labyrinth organ physiology. Wild populations are threatened by habitat loss and pollution. Lifespan: 2โ5 years. The genome is sequenced (2n=42). IUCN: Vulnerable (wild).
