Species Overview
A large freshwater spiny eel (family Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes) native to South and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan to Indonesia. Adults reach 50โ90 cm (occasionally 100 cm). They have a highly elongated, laterally compressed body with a pointed, snout-like extension of the upper jaw (rostral appendage) used for probing substrate. The dorsal fin is preceded by a series of short, isolated spines. Coloration is brownish with a complex pattern of dark, irregular zigzag or reticulate markings along the flanks, resembling tire tracks. They inhabit rivers, streams, lakes, and swamps, preferring sandy or muddy substrates where they burrow. Nocturnal and secretive, hiding in crevices and under rocks by day. Predatory, feeding on insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and small fish. They possess a rudimentary air-breathing ability. In the aquarium trade, they are popular but require large tanks. They are also an important food fish in parts of Asia (India, Thailand). Sexing is difficult externally. Females scatter eggs on submerged surfaces. Lifespan: 10โ18 years in captivity. IUCN: Least Concern.
