Species Overview
A freshwater synbranchiform fish (family Synbranchidae) native to East, South, and Southeast Asia. Adults typically reach 25โ100 cm. They have a highly elongated, eel-like body with no pectoral or pelvic fins, vestigial scales, and a continuous fin fold. Coloration is brown to olive dorsally, lighter below. They are obligate air-breathers, possessing a vascularized pharyngeal cavity for gas exchange, and can survive out of water for extended periods by burrowing into mud. They are nocturnal, benthic predators eating insects, worms, shrimp, frogs, and small fish. Their most notable biological feature is sequential hermaphroditismโthey are protogynous, starting life as female and transitioning to male after first reproduction (typically at 1โ2 years). This makes them a model for sex change mechanisms and sex determination research. They are an important food fish in Asia, raised in rice paddies and ponds. Invasive populations exist in the southeastern US (Florida, Georgia). The genome has been sequenced. 2n=24. Lifespan: 8โ10 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
