Species Overview
A small marine fish (family Pomacentridae) native to the western Pacific (northern Queensland, Melanesia, including the Great Barrier Reef and Papua New Guinea). Adults measure 6โ8 cm (smaller than A. ocellaris). Nearly identical in appearance to A. ocellarisโvivid orange with three white bars bordered by thick black margins (the black is generally wider and more prominent in A. percula). They are obligate anemone symbionts, associating primarily with Heteractis magnifica and Stichodactyla gigantea. Like all clownfish, they are protandrous hermaphrodites: all individuals start as male, with the largest dominant fish becoming female. Females are the largest and most aggressive group members. Males guard eggs deposited on hard substrate near the host anemone; incubation: ~6โ8 days. Omnivorous: algae, copepods, and food captured by the anemone. They have been a model for studying mutualism, social hierarchies, sex change, and larval dispersal. Captive breeding is well established. Coral reef degradation and ocean warming (causing anemone bleaching) threaten wild populations. Lifespan: 6โ10 years (up to 30 in exceptional cases). IUCN: Least Concern.
