Species Overview
A large freshwater cyprinid (family Cyprinidae) native to East Asia (rivers of China, from the Amur to the Pearl). Adults commonly reach 60โ120 cm and 20โ35 kg; the record exceeds 45 kg. They have an elongated, cylindrical body, a slightly flattened head, a terminal mouth without barbels, and large, dark-edged scales. Coloration is olive to silvery. They are the only purely herbivorous fish among the major aquaculture species, feeding voraciously on aquatic macrophytesโconsuming up to 40% of their body weight daily. This trait led to their worldwide introduction for aquatic weed control in ponds, canals, and lakes. However, they can overgraze vegetation, eliminating habitat for native species. They are one of the "four traditional Chinese carp" and one of the most produced aquaculture fish globally (>5 million tonnes/year). They require flowing water for spawning (semi-buoyant eggs drift downstream). Females are extremely fecund (up to 2 million eggs). Triploid (sterile) grass carp are used where reproduction must be prevented. The genome is sequenced (2n=48). Lifespan: 10โ15 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
