Brown-marbled grouper

Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, commonly known as the brown-marbled grouper, is a large reef-associated fish of the family Epinephelidae, widely distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the western Pacific islands. Adults can reach up to 120 cm in length and exceed 10 kg in weight. The body is robust and slightly compressed, featuring a large mouth, protruding lower jaw, and a distinctive coloration of pale to brownish background overlaid with dark brown hexagonal blotches and smaller spots, producing a characteristic marbled pattern. This species inhabits coral reefs, lagoons, and reef slopes at depths of up to 60 m, where it functions as an ambush predator feeding on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Like most groupers, E. fuscoguttatus is a protogynous hermaphrodite, maturing first as female before transitioning to male. It forms predictable spawning aggregations, rendering it highly vulnerable to targeted overfishing. The species is commercially important across Southeast Asia and widely cultivated in marine net-cage aquaculture. Notably, hybridization with E. lanceolatus yields the popular "tiger grouper" hybrid prized in aquaculture. Its genome has been sequenced to support studies on growth traits, disease resistance, and aquaculture genetics. Wild populations are declining due to overexploitation and reef habitat degradation.
