Giant grouper

Epinephelus lanceolatus is the largest bony fish inhabiting coral reefs, reaching up to 270 cm in length and over 400 kg in weight, making it one of the most massive teleosts in reef ecosystems. It belongs to the family Epinephelidae and is distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and Polynesia. The body is massive, robust, and slightly compressed, with a very large mouth and rounded tail. Juveniles display bold black and yellow irregular banding, while adults become uniformly dark brown to gray-black with faint mottling. E. lanceolatus inhabits coral and rocky reefs, caves, wrecks, and estuaries from shallow waters to about 100 m. It is an apex predator, feeding on fish, small sharks, juvenile sea turtles, crustaceans, and cephalopods. As a protogynous hermaphrodite, it first matures as female and later transforms to male. Growth is slow and maturation is late, making it extremely vulnerable to overfishing. The species is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN. It is highly valued in Asian live reef fish trade and aquaculture, particularly for hybridization with E. fuscoguttatus. Its genome has been sequenced, contributing to studies on growth regulation, sex change mechanisms, and disease resistance in grouper aquaculture.
