Species Overview
A medium-to-large freshwater cyprinid (family Cyprinidae) native to China, particularly the middle and lower Yangtze River basin. Adults typically reach 25โ50 cm and weigh 1โ3 kg (up to 6 kg). They have a deep, laterally compressed body (typical bream shape), a small, blunt head, silver-gray to dark gray coloration with darker dorsal surface and lighter belly, and moderate-sized scales. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on aquatic macrophytes, algae, and detritus. An economically important freshwater aquaculture species in China, first successfully bred in captivity in Wuchang (Hubei Province) in the 1960sโhence the common name. Annual production exceeds 800,000 tonnes. They are valued for their delicate white flesh. They breed in spring-summer in flowing water. Females are highly fecund. The genome has been sequenced, facilitating selective breeding programs for growth rate, disease resistance, and flesh quality. They are used as a model for herbivorous cyprinid fish physiology and genetics. They can tolerate relatively low water quality. Lifespan: 8โ12 years. Not evaluated by IUCN.
