Species Overview
A large, predatory freshwater centrarchid (family Centrarchidae) native to eastern and central North America. Adults commonly reach 30โ50 cm and 1โ5 kg; trophy fish can exceed 10 kg. They have a deep, laterally compressed body, a very large mouth (the maxilla extends past the eyeโhence "largemouth"), greenish coloration with a dark lateral band, and a deeply notched dorsal fin. They inhabit warm lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and slow rivers with vegetated littoral zones. Apex ambush predators, they eat fish, crayfish, frogs, and even small birds and mammals. Males construct and guard circular nests on the bottom, fanning eggs until hatching (~3โ5 days). They are the most popular freshwater game fish in the United States, driving a multi-billion-dollar sport fishing industry. They have been introduced to over 50 countries and are considered a highly destructive invasive species outside their native range, devastating native fish and amphibian communities. The genome has been sequenced. Lifespan: 10โ16 years. IUCN: Least Concern (native range).
