Species Overview
A medium-to-large freshwater percichthyid fish (family Sinipercidae) native to East Asia (China, Korea, Vietnam). Adults reach 30โ70 cm and weigh 1โ8 kg. They have a laterally compressed, deep body with a large, protrusible mouth, prominent jaw teeth, and striking colorationโolive to golden-brown with irregular dark blotches and spots, sometimes with reddish hues. They are aggressive ambush predators found in lakes and rivers with clear water and rocky or vegetated substrates. Remarkably, they are obligate piscivores from the very first feedingโeven larvae must eat live fish fry (not zooplankton), a trait almost unique among cultured fish, making hatchery production challenging. They are one of the most prized freshwater food fish in China, commanding high market prices for their tender, flavorful white flesh. The idiom "ๆก่ฑๆตๆฐด้ณ้ฑผ่ฅ" (when peach blossoms fall on flowing water, mandarin fish grow fat) appears in classical Chinese poetry. Aquaculture production has grown significantly but depends on live prey fish supply. The genome is sequenced. Lifespan: 8โ12 years.
